When we were choosing a piece of property for our farm, we searched for a space at the top of a hill, so we would not have to deal with run-off pollutants from neighbors situated higher up. The plot of land where Orchard Hill Organics stand met that requirement which is one of the reasons we purchased it.
While naturally we couldn’t control air pollutants, we knew that if we kept our property clean, we could manage any pollutants that might be on the ground and assure that our soil remained organic.
And we’re proud to say that in the 24 years we’ve been farming, we’ve never used one spray, one pesticide, one herbicide, one fungicide to manage the crops. Certainly, there were times when some trees were stressed, and we could have deployed those methods. However, our philosophy has always been we’d rather lose the tree than poison the soil. And we’ve remained true to that pledge, being staunch stewards of the soil, keeping it squeaky clean year after year.
